Charles was born in Birmingham on 22nd June 1917. He was the eldest of seven children. His siblings were Edna (1920-2009), Edward (1923-1981), Elsie (1925-1955), Reginald (1927-1929) and Ronald 1929-2003) and Ellen (1920)
The 1921 census states that Charles is living with his parents Sidney and Kathrine and his sister Ellen aged 11months at 88 Hurst Street, Birmingham. Sidney’s occupation is recorded as a metal worker but is unemployed at this time.
According to the 1939 census Charles was living with his parents Sidney (1894-1945) and Kathrine (1893-1972) and four of his siblings at 25 Millhouse Road, Birmingham 25. Charles’ occupation is stated as a power press hand. Charles’ father had served in WW1 in the King’s Royal Rifles. In 1916 he had been reported as missing. It must have been such a relief for his family when he turned up alive.
In Q2 1941 Charles married a Warwick girl Beatrice Hall (1921-1984). They had one daughter born in 1942.
Beatrice remarried – Derrick Morris Cyphus (1930-2005) – in Warwick in 1956. They had three daughters.
Charles’ father died aged 52 in 1945. His mother Kathrine married Thomas Hardware in 1949.
