Jack was born in Warwick on the 16th June 1908. According to the 1911 census he was living at 46 Coten End, Warwick with his parents Robert Bertram (1875-1950) and Maud Elizabeth (1880-1916), his sister Katherin Mary (1906-1995), his mother’s sister Fanny (1871-1955) and two female servants. Jack’s father was an auctioneer, valuer and estate agent. Jack attended Warwick School.

According to the 1921 census Jack aged 13 was still living at 46 Coten End with his father, a widower, and his sister Katherine aged 15. Also residing at the house was Kathleen Hutton housekeeper, a servant Nellie Phillips and a visitor Margaret Norah Hutton aged 5.

Jack’s mother had died in 1916 aged 35. In 1923 his father married Kathleen Hutton (1895-1977) and they had one son, Jack’s half brother, Robert Gardner (1923-1999).

Jack married Nancy Olver (1912-1994) in 1936 in Warwick. They had two children John Robert (1937-2016) and a daughter born in 1939. Jack’s son John emigrated to Canada whilst in 1939 Jack was living with his family at 41 Northumberland Road, Leamington Spa, his occupation was civil engineer. Before his marriage Jack had spent some time in Rhodesia, Kenya and South Africa. According to probate records Jack left his widow £8853 1s 4d, the equivalent to nearly £500,000 today.
