Jack was born in the second quarter of 1916 in Clutton, Somerset – his birth record shows his mother’s maiden name as Smart so it seems she was single. By the time of the 1921 census, Jack is living at 14 Beech Road, Horfield, Bristol as the adopted son of William Jane and Edith Matthews. They also had a son, William Frederick and a daughter Mary May. Jack is 5 years 3 months old so was born in 1916.
Jack married Jessie Mary Law in Warwick in Q4 of 1939. She later married Gilbert L Milton in Q1 1945. Jessie died in Exeter on 3rd May 1999.

According to POW records Jack was captured in Hong Kong on Christmas Day 1941. He was initially reported as missing but was sent to Shamshuipo POW camp where he died of dysentery on 13th February 1942.
