The 1891 census shows the family living in the mining village of South Hetton. John was recorded as a storeman and George as a coalminer. Stephen, now 14, was still at school and had a younger sister, Mary (8).

One record shows Stephen marrying Caroline Eliza Lamsdale, who was from Leamington Spa, on 11th September 1904 in Hetton, however the parish register of Holy Trinity, Leamington Spa shows them married there on 8th October, in the presence of Caroline’s father, John, who was a schoolmaster, as was Stephen.  The 1901 census for Warwick shows Caroline, also a school teacher, boarding with the family of a fellow teacher at 22 Broad Street Warwick whereas a 1906 electoral register lists Stephen Bright at North Road, Wingate.
