Arthur was born in Willersey, Gloucestershire in 1883.

1901 sees the family, headed by Henry Hopkins and his wife Mary living near Budbrooke Church. Arthur is the eldest at 18 and is listed as a Carter. He has three younger brothers, Caleb, Ralph and Frank and a sister, Alice.

By 1911, Arthur is working as a Farm Labourer and is a lodger at the home of George Reeves, who was a Warwick man. Both are listed as Widowers.  Arthur had married Lizzie Reeves of Barford on June 2nd 1909 but she was buried less than a year later on March 17th 1910.  At the time of Lizzies death, the couple were living at Keytes Lane, Barford.

Arthur married again, to Beatrice Maud Shaw on the 26th December 1914 in St Paul’s Church, Warwick. The couple then lived in Red Lion Lane, Barford.  They had a daughter, Alice May, in 1915.

Arthur’s wife Beatrice died in Carlisle in 1971 and his daughter Alice died in 2001.
