Matthew was born in Stockingford, Warwickshire. His parents were David and Selina and he was the middle son of five boys. Robin and Eli were his older brothers and Samuel and Frank were younger.

Matthew married Maud Gertrude Bister in July 1912 in Warwick. Maud had lived in Quarry Street, Milverton and she was baptised at All Saints Church, Warwick.
