Aldhelm Stewart Courteney Smith as born in Warminster in June 1896.  His parents were Reginald Toomer Smith and Mary Letitia (nee Juggins).  His father, was a horse breaker and trainer.

He was the eldest of four children and had a sister, Muriel, and two brothers Reginald and Edward.

In 1911, Aldhelm was living with his grandparents, Harry and Katie Chapman at Brickchimneys Farm in Frome, Somerset.

The following appeared in the Warwick Advertiser on 9th June 1917 and says that Aldhelm was well known in Warwick and also that the family had previously lived in Crompton Street.  It may be that his father was connected with Warwick Racecourse as Crompton Street sits adjacent to the main entrance.
