John Stanley was born in Shrewley, Warwickshire in and baptised at the Parish Church there on 23rd September 1894. His parents were John and Mary Ann and they were living at ‘Lower Shrewley’
The family were still living in Shrewley at the time of the 1901 census where John senior (42) is described as a Stockman. His wife was ten years younger than him. She died in 1906.
By 1911 the family were living at 29 Commercial Buildings, Saltisford and John senior is described as a widower and is working as a ‘jobbing gardener.’ John junior is now 16 and he has two younger sisters, Edith May (15) and Eva (13).
