Samuel William Figgis was born in 1920 in Knowle, Warwickshire to parents Frederick Charles and Agnes. His mother had been married and widowed (married name Coton ) before so Samuel had a half brother and sister – Charles Ernest (born 1915) and Beatrice Rose (born 1916). Agnes’s first husband Shirley Palmer Coton was in the Worcestershire Regiment during WW1. He was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 16th January 1917.
According to the 1921 census Samuel aged 13 months was living at Hill Cottage, Copt Heath, Knowle, Solihull with his parents and his half brother Charles and half sister Rose Coton. Samuel’s father was a bricklayer’s labourer but was out of work at this time.
He had two more sisters – Agnes Jean (1924-1913) and Nellie M (1926-2016). His father died in 1930 so Agnes became a widow for the second time.
Samuel married Doris Hatton in Q3 1942. she went on to marry Douglas P Love in Warwick in 1949. They had one son.
