Eric was born in 1914 in Blean, a village near Canterbury, Kent. In 1911 his parents, Stephen William and Sarah Elizabeth, were living in Bromley, Kent with Eric’s brother Stephen, born in 1905. Eric’s father was a grocer.

By 1921 the family were living at Stone House, Sea Wall, Whitstable, Kent. There was a furher boy in the family – Stanley Peter – who was 10 months old.

Eric married Alice Emily Hewitt in Warwick in 1936. by 1939 they were living at 39 Guy Street, Warwick. The couple had two children Brian John (1937-2013) and Pamela born in 1940 a few months before her father died.

Eric’s mother, Elizabeth, died in 1947 aged 69. His father died in 1929 aged 48 and his wife, Alice, died in 1984 aged 74.
