The Warwick’s in Gallipoli 16th September

On September 16th, there will be some free events for Heritage Open Days marking the heroic actions of Warwickshire regiments at Gallipoli in 1915. Soldiers from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and the Warwickshire Yeomanry fought in the conflict.

From 10am there will be a special exhibition at the Yeomanry Museum in the Jury Street Court house, with an illustrated talk by Ian Binnie of the Gallipoli Association at 10.30am.

At 12noon there will be a short wreath-laying service at St. Mary’s Church. Then at 2pm Ian Binnie will deliver his talk again at the Fusilier Museum at St. John’s House.   Gallipoli poster

The campaign was a failed attempt by the allies to capture the fort at the entrance to The Dardanelles and to capture Constantinople from the Turkish Ottoman Empire. There were estimated to be 250,000 casualties on each side.
